Sclerocarya birrea: Review of the pharmacology of its antidiabetic effects and toxicity

Sclerocarya birrea (A. Rich.) Hochst, an African widespread plant is known to be used for type 2 diabetes management in sub-Saharan Africa. This review aims summarize the findings pharmacology of S. antidiabetic effects and its vivo vitro toxicity. To collate data on birrea, various scientific search engines like PubMed, Scopus, Scifinder, Google Scholar, Web Science, Wiley Online, SpringerLink, ScienceDirect were consulted. The collected organized line with toxicology. has shown consistent hypoglycaemic attributed increase insulin secretion, glycogenesis digestive glucose uptake, along α-amylase α-glucosidase inhibition. extracts also associated reduction lipids blood levels, reno- cardio-protective mellitus. exhibited a good safety profile LD50 ranging from 600 3000 mg/kg body weight depending parts used.
